Icelus Field
International China Program: Summer 2009
Critics: Eric Wong, Richard Sarrach, Che-Wei Wang
In collaboration with: Nathan Abbe, Tae Yoon Lee, Carla Lores, Michael Yarinsky

Icelus - eye-SELL-uss - genus of small, bottom dwelling fishes, mainly found in the North Pacific. They are characterized by a large, laterally compressed head and small spines. The lateral line is present and the dorsal fin base are dotted with plates.

Field - 1. a broad, level, open expanse of land. 2. a cultivated expanse of land, especially one devoted to a particular crop: a field of corn. 3. a portion of land or a geologic formation containing a specified natural resource. 4. an event space. 5. An area or region where business activities are conducted: sales representatives in the field. 6. a region of space characterized by a physical property, such as gravitational or electromagnetic force or fluid pressure, having a determinable value at every point in the region.

Icelus Field is a proposal for the Chong Kneas flood plain community on Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia. Visiting sites in Cambodia, Vietnam, and China, studies in plastic forming, bicycles, site, water collection, mechanical connection, cycles, mobility, and deployability begin to form a solution tailored to the people of the flood plain. The design is a moveable marketplace, populated by both land and water dwellers and activated by the pressures of the tides. The proposed market is designed around used bike frames while the roof of the structure is plastic formed material that are used to harvest water for the much needed population that dwell there.
